Lucien Bourjeily, a Lebanese theatre and film maker, also known for his activities against corruption and anti/censorship in Lebanon, will held a workshop and closed discussion for film and theatre students on the 12th of April in Prague, Czech republic. His first feature film, Heaven Without People will be screened in Prague the evening before, the 11th of April at Kino Pilotů at 8pm.

Food in Islam

A lecture by the acknowledged Czech Arab studies expert Bronislav Ostřanský will offer a brief lead-in to three areas which pay special attention to food and drink in the context of Islam. First, food and drink will be presented as a an object of Islamic law, then from the perspective of the ideas of medieval physicians and philosophers based on ancient teachings on elements and temperaments, and, finally, as part of so-called prophetic medicine, which does not fail to make various recommendations on how to eat properly. The main organiser of this lecture is the student assosiaton Madžlis.

Heaven Without People (2017, Lucien Bourjeily)

In his feature debut, director Lucien Bourjeily reveals what all can happen when a sprawling Lebanese family meets for an Easter lunch. The film Heaven Without People reflects disagreements between the younger and older Lebanese generations against the backdrop of the current political and social situation in the country. The quality of the film is evidenced by the Jury’s Special Mention at the Dubai International Film Festival in 2017. The film will be shown in Arabic with Czech subtitles. We recomend the booking in advance via this link.

The screening and follow-up discussion will be attended by the director Lucien Bourjeily himself. We would like to thank to the student association Madžlis for the production support of this event.

Frustrated from garbage and rubbish that can be found scattered all over Jordan, Amal has decided to find a solution to this environmental problem and contribute to a more sustainable future of Jordan. In 2012, she founded the Towards Zero-Waste Initiative, which  is spreading awareness of sustainable lifestyles through educational programs. Amal's journey was documented by a Lebanese director Elie Nemri. The movie is screened in the original version with English subtitles.

DANCING NOMADS: DJs Toukadime & DJ Syriantal

Friday night at Hybernská will make you move with oriental rhythms in combination with hip-hop, deep house, funk and more. Toukadime, a DJ duo, will present a set intertwined with the tones of North African. Native of Damascus and a star on the Berlin scene Syriantal will bring his mix of music to the dancing nomads combining Middle East genres with the current club scene. 

ORIENTAL STREET FOOD MARKET in Prague

ORIENTAL STREET FOOD MARKET will be a fun day for individuals and families. The event will take place for the first time on the premises of VNITROBLOCK in Holešovice, where you will have a chance to stroll through an Oriental bazaar and taste traditional Middle Eastern food. You can listen to a talk by a globetrotter and chef, learn how to take food photography or how to order in Arabic at a restaurant. The event is held as part of the Festival of Arab Culture 2019 in cooperation with the student association Madžlis.

ArabFILMfest: Documentary film programme

5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Couscous: The Seeds of Dignity (2017, Habib Ayeb)
This award-winning documentary focuses on political, social, economic and environmental conditions of cereal cultivation and cous cous production in Tunisia. It examines the centrality of the food issue for the Tunisian struggle for individual and collective human dignity as well as issues of independence and sovereignty. The film will be shown in Arabic and French with English subtitles. The screening will be followed by a debate with a selected guest. The event is presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Tunisia in Prague. For capacity reasons we recommend advance on-line booking on our website.

7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Soufra (2017, Thomas A.Morgan) 
The film Soufra presents the inspirational story of Mariam Shaara, a third-generation refugee in the Lebanese Burl El Barajneh refugee camp, where she has spent her whole life. Against all odds she decideds to follow her dream and founds a succesful catering company called "Soufra", which gives women in the camp not only work but also hope of a better life. The film is in Arabic with English subtitles. The screening will be followed by a debate with selected guest. For capacity reasons we recommend advance on-line booking on our website.

Water as a reason for both conflict and cooperation: The Nile Case

Water is a key resource not only in the Middle East region, but also many other areas worldwide. But what if it is shared by multiple countries? Access to water resources and their usage may become a cause of conflict but also a platform for cooperation between two or more states. An example of a shared resource is the Nile River and its basin. Jakub Mazanec from the Institute of World History at the Faculty of Arts,  Charles University will speak about the expired hegemony of Egypt, why Sudan is "the king maker" and Ethiopia "a dog in the manger ".

For four years, there has been a civil war that has claimed tens of thousands of victims in Yemen. Citizens suffer from many diseases and severe malnutrition. These are the result of a blockade that prevents the import of medicine and goods into the country. More than half of Yemen's population suffers from starvation, yet still a large proportion of the population spends money on a light drug called kath and its chewing  is part of the daily life of people in Yemen. But what impact does this custom have on the local economy? And how does the consumption of this plant affect the alimentation of the population? Veronika Kramáreková, who has explored the topic of khat usage for several months in Yemen, will talk about the issue.
