Dar Ibn Rushd

The publisher Dar Ibn Rushd was founded in 1990, it specializes in book publishing focused on the Orient, particularly on the area of the Middle East. Its other publications are language textbooks for oriental languages like Arabic, Indonesian or Turkish, dictionaries, translations of literary works by authors of the Orient, but also works of some Czech authors and publicists that are related to the topics of the publisher. A special group of publications is created by a list of tale collections by authors of different parts of the Orient like Modern stories of Tunis, Algiers, Syria, Morocco, India and Libya. The translations of these literary works are often the first experience of Czech readers with the literature of that particular country. The publisher Dar Ibn Rushd also published works of classical authors like Džibrán Chalíl Džibrán, Omar Chajjám or Sheikh Muhammad an-Nafzáví, usually in translations by our distinguished orientalist experts. Also a novel by the contemporary Korean author Han Mal-Suk, that was nominated for the Nobel Price for Literature, was published here. The founder of the publisher - Charif Bahbouh - published several publications in Czech, e.g. Syria, Libya, Czech for Arabs, The wonders of Arab calligraphy, or a collection of poetry A bitter crescent moon above the Prague. He is also a coauthor of following publications: The mystery of five gates (a book of Arab fairy-tales), Arab proverbs, The Encyclopedia of Islam, Arabic I, II and III (textbooks), Czech-Arab and Arab-Czech conversation, Syrian and Lebanese cuisine, the League of Arab countries and other. Mr. Bahbouh read though 200 Arabian manuscripts in 1997 and took part in cooperation with the National Library of the Czech Republic, Albertina Icome Prague and UNESCO in order to provide access to these manuscripts to public. The result of the cooperation was a CD publication called Catalog of the Arabian manuscripts of the National Library and a brochure The digital public access to valuable documents, that was published both in Czech and English.
